Another Cookbook Review!

Just in case you can't read the title in the picture, this cookbook review is for Good Time Eatin' In Cajun Country by Donna Simon. I happen to love Cajun food, so I was very excited when I stumbled across this book. In this book there are sections for breakfast, salads and salad dressings, soups and sandwhiches, main dishes, side dishes and sauces, breads, and desserts. Even though the recipes say vegetarian, they are all vegan with the exception of honey in a some recipes (when I make those recipes, I'll substitute agave or maple syrup). I really like this book because all of the recipes I've tried so far were quite easy to make, but they all tasted great. The only setback for some people might be that most (not all, but most) of the recipes make 6-8 servings, although I'm sure you could cut them in half.

Shown here are: Hush Puppies-baked, not fried (bottom left), Collard Greens (top right), and Broussard Black-Eyed Peas. Also shown in the picture are salad and steamed sweet potatoes (not from the book, although there is a recipe for sweet potatoes in it).

This was our 4th of July meal. It was the Barbeque Gluten recipe over a sprouted grain bun and the Mustard or Collard Greens recipe (I used kale instead, and it was delicious!). I called it Barbeque seitan because gluten doesn't sound too appetizing, does it?

This photo shows Lafayette Lima Beans, Mustard or Collard Greens (again, using kale, again, delicious!), and the cornbread recipe. Also shown are simple steamed carrots (not in the book).

Just to give you a sample of what's in the book, here are some of the recipe names: Southern Homefries, Breaded Tofu, Biscuits and Cream Gravy, Saucisse (sausage-it's made from chickpeas, besides other things), Corn Chowder, Gumbo Des Herbes, MaMa's Cole Slaw, French Potato Salad, Jumbalaya, Red Beans and Rice, Scalloped Eggplant, Macaroni and Cheese, Yeast Cheese Sauce, Pecan Mushroom Sauce, Bread Pudding, and Coconut Cake.

Yum!

I didn't think much of that book, but then, I'm from Louisiana and picky about my native food. :-) I'm going to take another look at it since you liked it so much.

I'm not into Cajun food, but those pics look scrumptious. :)
